Database Access
  • January 2011
Some questions as part of my research into Interspire (although these questions probably apply to any cart with an online DB):

    - How easy is it to access the database from outside i.e. a program running on a PC?
    - is the DB structure is fairly straightforward?

    Thanks,

db structure - it is fairly straightforward.

outside access - what do you mean? assuming that you want to connect to it through one of your programs, it is possible as it is a standard mysql database (login etc is required)

OK, Thanks for the reply. It pretty much as I guessed.

I'm looking to update stock quantites from a PC application. My little Amazon program has grown a lot, and now gets/sends orders, stock quantities, products and 'shipped' statuses direct from Amazon using the Merchant Web Services. I just want to tie in the stock control with the website.

Sorry for hi-jacking the thread but how do you find selling on Amazon, is it straight forward? Expensive? Not worth it?

This question comes up every now and again. Try searching the UK Business Forum for 'Amazon'.

It's been very successful for me (and Panagiotis, I believe). I don't do ebay, but the impression I get is that it is a lot better than ebay, i.e. doesn't have the scam buyer problems.

I don't have many competitors on a lot of products, so that helps keep prices reasonable.

It has a very high trust factor with shoppers. There are people out there who only shop on Amazon. I've seen people look at stuff on my website and then buy from me it on Amazon (at a higher price). I've also had customers say that they found us through Amazon.

The feedback system works well (says Mr. 100% positive). You will always get the odd 'unfair' bad feedback, but everyones does, which is why most traders are at 98% and 99% positive.

Here's basic costs. The fee percentage varies depending on which category you are selling in. I've quoted mine, which is a typical rate. The fee is calculated on the price and the postage.:

You can set your own postage rates, but it must fit in to a formula. Can be tricky for overseas rates for a wide range of rates.

    Trader:
No monthly fee. 17.25% of sales. Can only join existing products. No logo

    Pro-Seller:
    £25/month. 15% of sales. Allowed a logo

    Seller Central
    £25/month. 15% of sales. . Allowed a logo
Get a chance at the 'Blue Button of Happiness'
Can add products yourself. Allows you to add product variants like size and colour.
I think you have to be invited to be a Seller Central after good performance as a Pro-Merchant.

I only really find three problems with Amazon:
    1. Shoppers tend to be lazy - don't bother to collect goods; send gifts without telling the recipient.
    2. Amazon (or another seller) can change product details without telling you.
    3. Only applies to us Toy & Game sellers, but there are rigorous performance targets you have to meet before being allowed to sell at Christmas.

    :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks very much for the info on Amazon, they are wanting us to sign up but had been put off by the chances of success on there, my concerns are now much reduced.

Soz to keep it off topic but don't you find it becomes a game of who has the cheapest price?

price competition is fierce among the independents that use seller central as they get the "blue button of happinness"

if you want a chat about them e-mail me or give me a call in the office.

at the end of the day you have to work out whether amazon will be beneficial to you or not. it may bring more sales but its a lot more hassle as well. especially if you have to create the products yourself.

The algorithm for the 'Buy Button' is quite complex and gets discussed a lot on the Amazon community. You don't have to be the cheapest, but you do need to be a Seller Central and have an established reputation and good feedback. The button is cycled between qualifying merchants.
