Preventing Google from indexing parked domain
  • December 2009
I have a domain that I purchased a couple of years ago with the aim of possibly setting up a separate wholesale/trade site to the main retail site but have never done anything with it.
It is currently parked and points to my main domain so anybody visiting www,myparkeddomain.co.uk will see the content from my main site www.golfteewarehouse.co.uk while the URL for the parked domain stays displayed in the address bar which is fine.

The problem I am concerned with is that Google has indexed around 20% of the parked domain and for some pages is ranking higher or instead of my main domain.

I assume that google could also treat the two domains as serving duplicate content.

I have added the following code into the htaccess file, will this solve the problem and encourage google to only index the main domain.
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.myparkeddomain.co.uk [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mydomain.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301]

Is there anything else I should be doing.

and points to my main domain
Im assuming that you have set the DNS to point at the site hence the indexing - it should be forwarded which will stop any indexing problem while keeping the link

    Thanks Mal,

The nameservers are currently pointing to main site so will get the fowarding set-up instead.

As the parked domain name was registered with my web host who don't offer much in the way of DIY changes (involves raising tickets) I have transferred the domain to 123-reg where my main domain is registered.

The transfer has just completed and I have selected non-framed web forwarding to my website.

I notice that under name servers I have:
    Nameserver 1 - ns1.clook.net
    Nameserver 2 - ns2.clook.net
which are the namesevers for my webhost, should I leave these as they are or change them.

Change them to the default 123-reg nameservers - set to default button bottom left of the page IIRC

    Thanks Mal,

Reset the nameservers last night and this morning all is working perfectly, just have to wait for Google to drop the parked domain urls from it index now.

Extra thought: Have you requested the parked domain to be removed from Google's index in Webmaster Tools?

I tried to but couldn't 'verify' the site. I get the error message 'Verification failed. Your verification file redirects to a disallowed location'

Don't do it as it can have serious implications. Just leave the pages - google removes them pretty quick these days so they are unlikely to be a problem.
