Turning your products into 3D models - Cool software.

    3dsom

making 3d models of your proucts, from images.

here is something i knocked up in 30 mins:
    http://www.skateasylum.co.uk/3dtest/skate.htm

    (and it shows)

    1) print out a special maker mat, put your product on it
    2) take pictures of it, from various angles. i took 15 for my model.
    3) load them up and 'draw around' your product's shape.
    4) press go and watch the app spew out a flash movie, like the one linked above.

    Pros:
    - fucking cool
    - REALLY works, even on complicated shaped things, with holes in them and such
    - user friendly.
    - will help you sell more of your difficult to describe products.
    - no special tools required, just camera and the marker mat
(the app prints the mat for you)
    - 30 day trial, FULL features and during the demo: "3D content created can be exploited commercially - no restrictions" (from the site)

    Cons:
    - awkward to draw round (mask) accurately, my model is crappy, becasue i failed to do this.
    - $800+ for the package to buy
    - runs on windows (but rather fast in vmware too)

I liked it, overall, and i'll be using it, but i have issues with the time it takes to draw around the product using the primitive tools given by the editor.

so, overall, fucking cool:  i love it.

    September 2009 Edit
Wow that is cool. Think I might try it out with one of our products which is a cat mouse toy - then put in on the site so it can drive all the cats that avisit our site mad :D

Been playing around with an business idea based on this, not this actual software tho.
Do you think there is a market, as this technology has been around for some time now?

I was planning to offer a service where people can send me products and then i create the 360 shot. Charge per shot, and offer bulk discounts for volume orders.

Would this be something people be interested in? how much would you expect to pay?

Be interested in what people have to say on this.

    Gabe,

How come I can see your model and not the rest of the examples? They're all complaining I don't have java installed which is true. It's the biggest waste of space there is and I won't touch it with a bargepole.

    That would explain it.

It is impressive though. Not quite to the standard of the 3d mobile phones you see but those are drawn from 3d models and to be able to do this with a camera and a bit of software is very neat.

Does this have the same coolness factor?

    http://www.chunkesolutions.co.uk/sandbox/360images/

When loaded, just click and drag it left or right

please be aware, that the test i showed in my post was literally me mucking with the software. the geometry is very bad and the textures are worse, becasue i turned the quality of the camera right down.

3d models produced from the software, with correct editing and enough time, look perfect.

I think in time stuff like this will become expected by visitors especially for unusual or designer type things.
